Your
Special Wedding Ceremony
Trying
to create a wedding
ceremony that is different from the cookie-cutter
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today..." approach can be
challenging.
Couples
today are looking for wedding ceremonies that are unique but
tradtional, have deep, personal meaning and also reflect their
spiritual/religious beliefs.
This is why having a frank discussion with the minister you have chosen is an
important part of creating the perfect ceremony.
This discussion helps
to lay out expectations on both sides, and determines if
those expectations can be met.
Here are a few
tips for approaching this discussion:
First, you will
need to find out if the minister is willing to accomodate your
personal situation(s).
Some of those situations include:
- You are of different faiths
- One or both of you has been
divorced
- You are not members of the
minister's church
Some ministers may not be willing to
marry you if these situations exist.
Its better to know this ahead of time so that you can have time to find
someone else.
Next, you should determine if the minister is willing to accomodate
your
wishes with regard to personalizing your ceremony. Some of
those wishes
might include:
- Decorations and flowers
- Having an additional
officiant
- Personalized vows and
specific readings
- Special ceremonies (e.g.,
Unity Candle, Unity Sand, etc.)
- Contemporary, non-religious
music that is appropriate
- Your input and/or "okay" of
the sermon
- Videographer locations in and
around the altar
- Having the minister wear a
microphone for the wedding video
Also, you should inquire about these
other important details regarding the ceremony:
- Mandatory pre-marital classes
- Customary fee or donation to
the church
- Marriage license processing
- Wedding rehearsal details
You may also wish to extend an invitation
to the minister to the reception.
Working closely with your minister can save time and headaches and goes
a long way toward creating a memorable wedding ceremony for you and
your guests.
